Merenneidon laulu

Merenneidon laulu for female singing flutist (2013)

02. May. 2014, Sibelius Academy Concert Hall
Nairi Azezian, Singing Flute

Nairi Azezian

This piece is written and dedicated to Nairi Azezian who has amazing talents for both singing and flute-playing. I met her at first as a singer when she sung my choir piece, Glossolalia, with Helsinki Chamber Choir in 2012. Quite surprised knowing that she is also a flutist! After that, she played once my Quintet ("< >") beautifully, and asked me if I could write a solo piece for her. There the idea came across my mind that I should compose for "singing flutist".

Merenneidon laulu means the song of mermaid in Finnish. I had a certain image with this fairy-tale theme, but tried to stick to the view of observer. Only a few scenic fragments or musical materials were set. All things are ambiguous so that the performer has several interpretative possibilities, that is she can be the mermaid, a seaman, wind, or something else... or even nothing at all. Nairi interpreted the piece wonderfully in her own way in the context of her Diplom concert. Many thanks to her!
