Dummy II for 5 players (2026)

Trace of Vanished Sound, 8 October 2026, Geoam Art Hall

Dummy II for 5 players (2026)
Flute (doubling Bass Flute), Contrabass Clarinet, Percussion, Violin & Cello

I once saw a huge pile of scrap metal on the outskirts of Cologne. Objects that had each served a purpose lay gathered in a single mass. Their forms remained, but their original functions were gone. The sight stayed with me and, much later, became the starting point for this piece.

The title Dummy echoes the Korean word deomi (더미, meaning “a pile,” as in a pile of scrap metal). It also suggests a stand-in: something that keeps the shape of an object without doing what the original was meant to do.

I gathered objects that were no longer in use and chose a few for the piece. What mattered was what their sounds could do within the music. As these sounds meet, connect or break off, and change through repetition, they gradually form a piece. The objects have lost their former uses, but they find new roles as the music unfolds.

Project Introduction — Trace of Vanished Sound
Project statement for the concert on 8 October 2026

Music is an art that unfolds in time. Sound begins to disappear as soon as it is heard, and these fleeting moments connect to form a work. Just as knowing that life will end leads us to give meaning to each moment, the disappearance of sound prompts us to ask what comes after it. What remains once a sound can no longer be heard? It may be reverberation and memory, traces that have become part of other sounds, or something that wanders through one person’s imagination, unheard by anyone else.

In Trace of Vanished Sound, composers turn their imaginations to what follows the disappearance of sound, rather than to how sound begins and ends. The seven new works presented in this concert each approach these traces in a different way. They explore how past sounds change in memory, how traces emerge anew through relationships with other sounds, and how objects and sounds that have lost their original uses find new roles. Each composer uses their own musical language to imagine the time after sound has disappeared.

This project features new works by four commissioned composers (Sooyoun Lee, SukJu Na, Jieun Jun and Jieun Noh) and three student composers. Through seminars and open workshops, composers of different generations shared their creative processes and ideas, while the student composers continued to review and develop their works. The aim was to move beyond a one-off performance with communication flowing in only one direction, and to create a space for sustained education and communication across generations and among audiences.

Amid the many sounds that are rapidly produced and consumed, it is becoming increasingly rare to stay with a single sound and revisit the space it leaves behind. In an environment of brief, immediate stimuli that repeat constantly, art, too, can easily come under pressure to deliver results and novelty at speed. Rather than offering a direct critique of this tendency, Trace of Vanished Sound seeks to offer a moment to return to music and reflect on what remains of value. The project finds its meaning in this shared experience: everyone gathered here, each from their own position, experiences the passing of sound together, and that shared time opens a space for creation, education and communication.

re-rendered patterns for 6 players (2026)
Bass Flute, Bass Clarinet, Contrabassoon (or Bassoon), Violin, Cello & Piano

“re-rendered patterns” explores the process by which a set of patterns is continuously reconfigured through the intuition of the composer and performers. Each pattern accumulates subtle, multilayered variations through changes in parameters, resulting in a constantly shifting flow across both vertical and horizontal dimensions.

Parametric Process for string trio and electric guitar (2026)

Parametric Process begins with the phenomenon of an earworm, in which a piece of music repeats involuntarily in the mind, and with the composer’s experience of hearing it transformed in unfamiliar ways in dreams. Familiar rhythms and melodies are repeated and gradually distorted in the unconscious, yet fragments and traces that hint at the original suddenly reappear. As different elements of the music are transformed in different ways, they move further away from their source while creating an increasingly vivid sense of reality.

AU MAGASIN DE NOUVEAUTES

Yi Sang (1910–1937) is one of the most well-known poets in Korea, yet his presence remains relatively unknown in Japan. What is particularly interesting is that many of his poems were originally written in Japanese, though few Koreans are aware of this fact. For a long time, we have regarded the Korean “translations” of his works as the originals, and in doing so, much of the linguistic texture of his poetry has been distorted. Through this project, I read and analyzed Yi Sang’s poems in their original Japanese form, gaining new insights into the rhythm, diction, and the subtle irony embedded within his language.

Yi Sang’s "AU MAGASIN DE NOUVEAUTES" is said to have been inspired by his impression of the newly opened Mitsukoshi Department Store in 1930s Gyeongseong (modern-day Seoul). The poem reflects the surreal atmosphere of that era, when the modern city was being swept by a new capitalist wave. In setting this text to music, I sought to translate the poem’s rhythm and the sensory nuances of its words into sound, while employing the compositional principles of process music—allowing gradual transformation and accumulation over time to reveal the underlying tension and irony within.
