AU MAGASIN DE NOUVEAUTES

 

Yi Sang (1910–1937) is one of the most well-known poets in Korea, yet his presence remains relatively unknown in Japan. What is particularly interesting is that many of his poems were originally written in Japanese, though few Koreans are aware of this fact. For a long time, we have regarded the Korean “translations” of his works as the originals, and in doing so, much of the linguistic texture of his poetry has been distorted. Through this project, I read and analyzed Yi Sang’s poems in their original Japanese form, gaining new insights into the rhythm, diction, and the subtle irony embedded within his language.

Yi Sang’s "AU MAGASIN DE NOUVEAUTES" is said to have been inspired by his impression of the newly opened Mitsukoshi Department Store in 1930s Gyeongseong (modern-day Seoul). The poem reflects the surreal atmosphere of that era, when the modern city was being swept by a new capitalist wave. In setting this text to music, I sought to translate the poem’s rhythm and the sensory nuances of its words into sound, while employing the compositional principles of process music—allowing gradual transformation and accumulation over time to reveal the underlying tension and irony within.

이상(李箱, 1910–1937)은 한국에서는 모두가 아는 대표적 시인이지만, 일본에는 아직 그 존재가 잘 알려져있지 않다. 흥미로운 점은 그의 여러 시가 본래 일본어로 쓰였음에도 그 사실을 아는 한국인은 많지 않다는 것이다. 우리는 그의 작품 한국어 ‘번역본’을 원문처럼 받아들이며 배워왔고, 그 과정에서 시의 언어적 결이 상당 부분 왜곡되어 왔다. 이번 작업을 통해 나는 이상의 시를 일본어 원문으로 직접 읽고 분석하며, 그의 언어가 지닌 리듬과 어법, 그리고 그 속에 감춰진 시대적 아이러니를 새롭게 마주할 수 있었다. 

이상의 「AU MAGASIN DE NOUVEAUTES」는 1930년대 경성(現 서울)에 새롭게 들어선 미츠코시 백화점에서 받은 인상이 시의 배경이 되었다고 알려져 있으며, 당시 근대 도시로서의 경성이 본격적으로 자본주의적 물결에 휩싸이던 시대적 분위기를 초현실적으로 반영한 작품이다. 이 시를 음악화하기 위해 나는 시의 운율과 단어가 가진 감각적 뉘앙스를 음악적으로 치환하는 한편, process music의 작곡기법을 활용하여 시간의 흐름 속에서 서서히 변형되고 축적되는 구조를 통해 그 내면의 긴장과 아이러니를 드러내고자 했다.

去勢された襪子。（彼女のナマヘはワアズであつた）

貧血緬𫃠。アナタノカホイロモスヅメノアシノヨホデス。

平行四辺形対角線方向を推進する莫大な重量。

マルセイユの春を解纜したコテイの香水の迎へた東洋の秋。

快晴の空に鵬遊するＺ伯号。蛔虫良薬と書いてある。

屋上庭園。猿猴を真似てゐるマドモアゼル。

彎曲された直線を直線に走る落体公式。

文字盤にⅩⅡに下された二個の濡れた黄昏。

ドアアの中のドアアの中の鳥籠の中のカナリヤの中の嵌殺戸扉の中のアイサツ。

食堂の入口迄来た雌雄の様な朋友が分れる。

黒インクの溢れた角砂糖が三輪車に積荷れる。

名刺を踏む軍用長靴。街衢を疾駆する造花金蓮。
